·
There
are 600 million girls in the developing world. In
the developing world 42% of girls are not enrolled in school. Over 50 million
girls live in poverty.
·
When a girl in a developing country receives seven
or more years of education, she marries four years later and has 2.2 fewer
children. (UN
Population Fund, State of World Population, 1990).An educated girl
will invest 90 percent of her future income in her family, compared to 35
percent for a boy.
·
When you multiply those numbers by 50 million
adolescent girls in poverty, and you get the most powerful force for positive
change on the planet.
·
As an educated mother, an active, productive
citizen, and a prepared employee, she breaks the cycle of poverty—for herself, for
her family, for her community.
·
When we support girls education, we can create change, not
charity.
·
To change the trend of global poverty, we must improve the education for girls, may be the closest thing to eliminating
the root cause.
·
Delay early marriage, delay first birth. Nearly 40
percent of girls will be married by 18. These girls are at greater risk of
school dropout, domestic violence, and adolescent pregnancy – the leading cause
of death for girls aged 15-19.
·
Encourage school completion. In families
that are desperately poor, girls don’t go to school if their families don’t see
a return on investment. Families must understand the long term benefits of
educating girls. With a strong practical education, girls quickly show that
they can contribute economically in their families and communities.
·
Transition to good jobs. When a girl finishes school, outcomes are better for everyone. But her
education won’t count unless it translates to a good job. And a good job can
help boost the economies of countries where people live on less than $2 a day.
·
Role Models make a difference. Female
teachers and mentors are strong role models. Mentors can provide a
multi-faceted approach to support girls to do better academically and to stay
in school.
·
Girls who
develop mentoring relationships increase awareness of community resources,
foster healthy choices, increase support of family members in their education,
and build resiliency to stay in school.
·
However, funding alone will not educate the next
generation of girls. New approaches and new ideas are also required. Progress
cannot come fast enough for girls and their communities in the developing
world.
